“Beating A Dead Horse” Gone Literal - Shocking Images of Chinese and Philippine Horse Fighting - Equestrians and Animal Lovers Beware…

February 19th, 2008 (Visited 33,734 times)

Not to long ago, I published a piece on Guillermo Habacuc Vargas’ art exhibit featuring a chained dog as it died on the exhibit floor. Actual and malicious animal abuse isn’t something that gets as much attention as it probably should, but it’s something that still can manage to shock those of us who’ve seen almost everything on the net.

In this case, it’s horses fighting to the death, for sport, in areas of China and the Philippines. I came across this earlier and couldn’t help but want to spread this. Horses are amazingly adept and intelligent creatures and to see them brought down to this basic of a level is terrible.

Here is some more information:

The crowd roars its approval as the chestnut stallion sinks his teeth into the throat of his opponent.

The terrified victim rears up on his hind legs and veers away in a desperate bid to escape, but it is no use.

Blood is pouring into his eyes and he can no longer see. His right ear is torn and bloody.

Stay-At-Home Dads.. Oops I mean Servers. Why should they be at home instead of a REAL job like a REAL Server?

February 5th, 2008 (Visited 25,304 times)

As a parent, you get used to instructional books that teach children about such things as how babies are made, emotions, and other mature themes in children-safe formats. Bright colors, ambiguous wording, and lots of smiling reassuring people help nail the point down.

With Super Bowl XLII recently passed, we’ve had a chance to see some crazy, random, and funny Super Bowl commercials. A lot of the time we think to ourselves that, if other advertising were as funny or unusual, that we’d welcome it more.

StayAtHomeServers.com does a pretty good job there. They put a fake reporter in an Onion-style parody web video. They make it seem as if they’re attacking stay at home dads. Why would a REAL server be at home when it should be in the office working like other servers?

Here are a few hilarious pictures from the online book aimed at helping children understand why kids may laugh at them for having a stay at home server. As a parent, I own several books that look almost IDENTICAL but cover different ideas. If you’re equally intrigued, check out the site.

Offices are why big people get grumpy and say bad words

Prison vs Work - TGI(almost)F!

Office Space - Prison vs WorkI was having a political discussion with a friend a while ago when we touched on the War on Drugs. The fact that we spend $600 every second to keep drugs like pot out of the hands of kids at a Snoop Dogg concert, and fail TERRIBLY in doing so, seems like we’re doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Especially when keeping drugs illegal makes things like prostitution, illegal immigration, and gang crime even worse. Seems that if we treated it like alcohol and tobacco, we’d make a killing on taxes, create more tax-paying jobs, and clean up the streets by forcing dealers to sell stereos out of the back of a van instead.

Not to wax political, but on the topic of prison and incarceration, we were joking that after taxes and the loss of freedoms and liberty we continue to face at the hand of the current administration… That we probably only had a marginal advantage at best over prisoners. Minus the gory details of the sex and violence in prisons at least.

Got this today and couldn’t help but laugh at how true it was. Granted not all jobs are like this. But after a long Monday commute… it sure can feel like it sometimes :)

The Dirty Truth About CAPTCHAs - Even The Best Get Hacked - Ask Yahoo!

The Dirty Truth About CAPTCHAs - Even The Best Get HackedYears ago, people had no idea what a CAPTCHA was. Around 2000, the term came into existance, as an acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”. The first CAPTCHA was developed by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas Hopper and John Langford of Carnegie Mellon University. As comment systems, login systems, and spam became more pervasive on the web, it began to be employed as a means to protect robots from having access where they shouldn’t.

Now, CAPTCHAs are ubiquitous and we’ve grown so used to them as security devices we view them as a nice lock on the door. Except, much like a lock… they too get picked (or cracked as the case may be).

Came across this and found it interesting:

A Few Truths About Super Mario Bros And Zelda That Will Completely Ruin Your Childhood - View At Your Own Risk!

January 27th, 2008 (Visited 29,083 times)

Super Nintendo Video Game SecretsFor those of us that were young when the Nintendo and Super Nintendo were the most popular video game consoles around, many of us grew so used to the games like Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, and other otherwise simple games. We could recite tactics, strategies, and level layouts in our sleep if needed.

I was around 6 or so when I got my first Nintendo and allowed my mind to be taken over by the beautifully colored sprites on the television screen. At that age, games were like babies. They seemed so simple in nature that you didn’t imagine it could be too complicated. At the same time, their complexities comfort you enough so that you never think to stop and break things down too far. You don’t know how they were made, but you were also happy enough to remain gleefully ignorant of the details.

I stumbled upon a few of these fun facts about some of the games I grew up on and couldn’t help but want to pass them on. Unfortunately for me though, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to see these games played again with the innocence I once had. So I warn you to leave, lest you see what cannot be unseen :)
