Video: Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails Tells Fans - STEAL MY MUSIC!

I’ve been a Trent Reznor/NiN fan since I was in high school, experiencing that trademark teenage angst. However, Trent is a music genius and natural talent. Literally a one man band, he’s broken out of the typically underground industrial scene into the mainstream with hits like “Closer”, “Hurt”, even having the latter covered by The Man In Black (Johnny Cash) himself.
If you’re new here, you’ll soon learn that I hate the RIAA/MPAA with a passion. I hate how they use intimidation tactics to force settlements, spending money they know their victims don’t have to force them to settle and admit guilt, even if they are innocent but lack the funds to pay a lawyer to fight their accuser in court. It’s just big business bending over the consumer.
With that said, there are artists out there that “get it” when it comes to music. They know that the market has changed. Nobody wants to spend $18 dollars on a CD when they only want one or two tracks. Millions is being spent on trying to punish file swappers when it’s very clear that it’s about as effective as the failed War on Terror or the failed War on Drugs. Sometimes you have to admit you’re working with a flawed business model and adapt or die.
When Trent Reznor toured in Australia, he was appalled at the pricing for his new CD, “Year Zero”. He felt the pricing was out of line with the rest of the world. When he came back months later and found nothing had changed, he spoke out. He was telling Australians they were getting screwed, and in his OWN words:
Trent Reznor:“Has the price come down at all?”
“I see a ‘no’, a ‘no’, a ‘no’…”
“Well you know what that means..”
“Steal it!”
“Steal away, steal, steal, and steal some more.. Give it to your friends, and keep stealing.”
“One way or another these motherf*ckers will get it through their head that they’re ripping you off and that’s not right.”
Right on Trent.. Keep it up.

Is this a legal defense if the RIAA mails you a letter for downloading his music?
The important thing about Reznor is that he is one of the artists serving as a mouthpiece for the current anti-RIAA movement. Thanks to artists like him the industry actually has pressure from within to change, and that’s important.
Seriously, Trent is only one of the few musicians that understands the music industry and just “gets it”. Telling his fans to just steal his album is a BIG FUCK YOU to the record label for selling his album far more expensive than other albums out there right in other countries. What was the record label’s excuse? “NIN has more dedicated fans that would buy at any price”. Good for Trent. I highly respect what he’s doing.
I wonder if he didn’t allready have money if he would pull this stunt.

I would never condone ’stealing’, but he’s got a point about the price of music. It’s not like the music is getting better and more fairly priced.
